Acid reflux surgery is an option that is considered after other measures to address acid reflux have failed. This procedure is an adaptation of a technique used by gynecologists to tie female fallopian tubes and to inspect the female reproductive organs. Using video probes and magnification technology, the abdominal region can be amplified for the purposes of inspecting GERD conditions and carrying out the fundoplication procedures. The GERD surgery strengthens the LES to restore normal pressure and prevent acid from refluxing into the esophagus.

The main benefits of acid reflux surgery are the elimination of heartburn and the associated symptoms. The procedure is quick and efficient. Patients do not experience long drawn out recovery times and can return to work within a week or two. In some cases, acid reflux surgical procedures are not recommended such as pregnancy, certain types of esophageal cancer or extreme obesity. In most cases, surgery is examined as a measure of last resort when other forms of treatment have failed to produce desirable results.
