Acid Reflux Diet

Acid Reflux is the condition whereby the liquid contained in the stomach travels to the esophagus, resulting in a vast amount of pain. However, with the correct diet and remedies, acid reflux can be stopped.

Locating the correct medication for acid reflux can be simple for some people, whereas others find it a case of trial and error before finding the correct one.

There are various acid reflux medicine available for acid reflux.

Antacids

In the case of mild symptoms, the primary medication is usually antacids, which neutralize digestive acids. They are usually used alone for the relief of occasional heartburn. The majority of antacids are available without prescription, and they contain the various combinations of three ingredients; magnesium, calcium or aluminum.

Prilosec (Omeprazole)

This is a prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication. This medication is designed to lessen the quantity of acid produced by the stomach. This medication is swallowed whole, and it heals the damaged tissues in the stomach for about two months. Because this medication has not yet been tested on pregnant women or nursing mothers, it should not be taken by them.

Nexium (Esomeprazole)

This is also a PPI medication. It is designed to suppress the enzymes that are produced by the stomach acid in order to alleviate the symptoms and the damages that are connected to acid reflux. This is normally taken in tablet form one hour before a full meal. However, there are cases where the patient is required to take it in intravenous doses. This medication has not been tested on pregnant women or nursing mothers.

Prevacid (Lansoprazole)

Yet again, another PPI acid reflux disease medication which holds back the production of acid, by allowing the damaged tissues inside the esophagus to heal correctly. These are in tablet form and can be swallowed whole or it can be placed under the tongue to dissolve. For those patients that cannot take tablets, there are intravenous doses available. This medication is recommended to pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Protonix (Pantoprazole)

Another PPI which is not as well known as the other forms of medication, but it does work in exactly the same way. However, this medication is more effective when it comes to the treatment of ulcers. It is in the form of a tablet and should be taken 30 minutes before a meal. This medication should be taken for two months, in order to confirm whether it is working successfully or not. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers.

Tagamet (Cimetidine)

This drug is believed by many to be an over-the-counter medication. However, a prescription is actually necessary in order to obtain this acid reflux medication. This medication comes in the form of tablets and is for those patients with continuous heartburn problems. This medication ceases acid production. However it is somewhat different to alternative PPI medication, as it stops histamines which stimulate acid production. This medication is mostly required when there is damage to the tissues. This medication has not been tested on pregnant women or nursing mothers.
